The Ardbeg Baptist Church Coffee Morning, held each Saturday, commenced not long after we moved into King Street from Ardbeg as an outreach to the community. Mrs. Jane McKenzie, a member of the Church Life Group, was the main initiator, and it has been a wonderful success through the years and is still going strong!
It is a very pleasant place to come for our own Church folks as well as folks from other churches on the island, those with no church connection at all, and for many visitors to the island.
We are very grateful to the folks that make up our five teams who are on the rota. Each team is responsible for making the tea and coffee, providing the eats, serving and chatting to the folks that come along and washing up afterwards. We also have a sixth team made up of men from the Church who set up the tables for the coffee morning and who also help to set up for the Church service afterwards. It is very much a joint effort with almost everyone having a job to do.
No charge is made, however, there is a box for anyone wishing to make a donation. Over the years a substantial amount of money has been raised for church funds. Our desire is to reach out in Christian warmth and friendship to whoever comes along and to be a witness to our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. Christian tracts are put on the tables for people to take away and read at their leisure.
Recently a play area has been set up in the hall for any children that come along and there is usually someone on hand to play with the children and make their time enjoyable while Mum or Dad is enjoying their coffee.
Each year a special Christmas Coffee Morning takes place when tea, coffee and a generous supply of Christmas fayre is served for a small charge. There are also several stalls selling crafts, homemade jams and preserves, cakes and lots of other goodies. Almost everyone in the church helps at this event in some capacity. It is a lovely start to the Christmas season with everyone working together, welcoming and chatting to the folks that come along whilst live Christmas music is being played in the background!
Many people in the past have helped to make the Coffee Morning a success in their day and they have passed the baton on for others to carry on. Who knows the lives that can be touched by a warm welcome, a listening ear and a kind word.
